Title: Throb 1
Five squares series
Format: 171 x 171 cm – 5ft 7in x 5ft 7in
Weight: 1.625 g – 3lb 9 oz
Date: 2018 – 2019
No. 198.2019.2
Technique: 1,063 fabric squares of five different sizes. Fragments assembled by hand using three techniques depending on size and the 3-D effect, then quilted onto canvas through a silk core
Description: The work owes its English title to the fact that the word “throb” has greater onomatopoeic impact than its French equivalent “pulsation”
Throb 1 was inspired by works featuring shading in warm colours by Aurélie Nemours, Rothko and Paul Klee, as well as Johannes Itten’s work on squares
The geometric base using squares of five different sizes was designed for “Ripples in the Water”. Here it has been fit into a square: a unique proportion to boost the dynamics. A library of red fabrics carefully collected over the course of 20 years, enhanced by two collections, features over 60 shades of red.
Wiggle room as needed to test reds.
Alternating classic and 3-D assembly techniques enhances the volume effect yet further, with the textile composition achieving sculpture status
Title: Throb 2
Five squares series
Format: 172 x 174 cm – 5ft 8in x 5ft 9in
Weight: 1.600 g – 3lb 8 oz
Date: 2018 – 2020
No. 209.2020.1
Technique: hand-stitched, then hand-quilted as three layers, including one that’s back-to-front, and one silk core
1,063 fabric squares of five different sizes
Description: Throb 1 and Throb 2 are made up of some 60 shades of red, painstakingly collected over the past 20 years. Inspired by the colourful pace set by Aurélie Nemours as well as Joannes Itten’s research into the optical effects of coloured squares. The inclusion of a handful of green squares sets a beat to the work as a whole
With the tiniest squares at the centre, spreading out to the largest on the outer edges, the squares appear to burst bigger: the circular quilting further emphasises this expansion effect. Assembled “inside out” to reveal the raw edges of each square, the surface gains thickness that catches the light, which further boosts the throb effect. The title, Throb, was chosen for its multiple visual evocations as the work gives the impression of palpitating, pulsating and even vibrating
Title: Des ronds dans l’eau
Ripples in the water
Five squares series
Format: 169 x 232 cm – 5ft 7in x 7ft 7in
Weight: 2.100 g – 4 lb 10 oz
Date: 2016 – 2017
No. 192.2017.1
Technique: three textile assemblage techniques: hand-assemblage, moulding on card, machine-assemblage, hand-quilting on a canvas base with a silk core
Description: the colour palette used by Paul Klee for his Bluhendes, 80 cm in width, inspired a personal construction – long explored and mulled over – to achieve a geometric base in which squares of five different sizes radiate out from the centre
To join the three layers and add graphics and relief to the piece, quilted concentric circles are spaced out to the pace of a geometric sequence
