Title: Semagramme 216
Semagram 216
Semagram series
Format: 72 x 139 cm – 2ft 4in x 4ft 7in
Weight: 0.590 g – 1 lb 5 oz
Date: 2020 – 2021
No. 216.2021.7
Technique: Hand-stitched and hand-quilted as three layers including one that’s back-to-front and one silk core
2,418 textile squares 3-cm wide
Description: As for works in the Moments Series, the Semagrams reprise the lines of force in a photographic collage by Karl Hermann Haupt, a Bauhaus student from the early 20th century.
In this Semagrams Series, the decision to reduce both the colour palette and the format augments the visual effect. More vibrant, the composition with its criss-cross gentian blue lines seems to be imbued with tension.
Central to the composition, two drawings from the original block are complete, surrounded by ten partial blocks, suggesting the full deployment of the drawing.
The off-centre concentric quilted spokes enhances the dynamic effect and holds the three layers together.
